Moncton Miracles to honour the late Ian Fowler at February 27 game

Released: February 22, 2016

February 22, 2016
Thanks to the generous support of Lounsbury’s and Technology Venture Corporation, the Moncton Miracles have 4,000 tickets for the February 27, 2016 game at the Moncton Coliseum. This game is being played in honour of the contribution made to basketball in Moncton by the late Ian Fowler. Mr. Fowler’s “jersey” will be retired in a pre-game ceremony. Through the purchase of these tickets by our sponsors, we are able to provide these tickets for only the cost of the box office fee which is $1.50 each.

It is our fervent hope that we will have a record crowd in attendance to honour the late Ian Fowler and to cheer the Miracles to victory.

Ian R. Fowler passed away on Saturday, November 5, 2011. Ian was the City of Moncton’s General Manager of Economic Development, Tourism & Culture with over 31 years of service as a city employee. He was instrumental in transforming Magnetic Hill into a major concert site and helped attract significant sporting events including the World Junior Baseball Championships, the World Junior Track and Field Championships, Touchdown Atlantic and the host city for FIFA U 20 and Women’s World Championship Tournament. He was a graduate of Harrison Trimble High School and the University of New Brunswick. Ian had a passion for sports, especially basketball, where he was a former player, official and coach. He also helped to establish the Moncton Kiwanis Minor Basketball Association; however, his greatest joy was watching his daughters play.

“I never met Ian, but I feel his presence daily when I’m in Moncton. He never watched a Miracles game but by all accounts was the driving force behind them coming to town. He never saw an NBL Canada game yet has the Executive of the Year Award for the entire league named after him. Thank you, Ian Fowler, for your vision & passion!” - NBL Commissioner, David Magley

“I know I will go through a range of emotions when we honour Ian. I miss him as both a friend but also someone who saw our city in High Definition when the rest of us saw it in Black and White with occasional tinges of colour. To see Dalhousie, New Brunswick native Ryan Smith, a UNB grad (the same school Ian graduated from) play a significant role with the Moncton Miracles would have been special to Ian as well.  Ian would be reminding us daily that we can do this. We just have to work a bit harder than everyone else. The Miracles will always be his team in my heart.” - Miracles Manager of Community and Player Initiatives, Norval McConnell
